For the first time in seventeen years, first-grade rugby league returns to Belmore Sports Ground this Monday night when the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs take on the Melbourne Storm in what is shaping up to be a landmark occasion for the local community.
The last NRL competition game at Belmore was played on Saturday, 15 August 1998 - ironically also against the Storm - when the Bulldogs emerged 8-4 victors in front of a passionate home crowd. Now, nearly two decades later, the historic ground will again come alive as over 15,000 fans are expected to pack the grandstand for one of the most anticipated games of the season.
Back to Belmore President Luke Cevolani said the return of NRL matches to the historic venue is a triumph for the Canterbury-Bankstown community.
"Belmore is more than just a stadium - it's part of the fabric of this community," Mr Cevolani said.
"This game will bring together generations of families who've shared memories here. Monday night will be something truly special, and it's a testament to the belief and hard work of everyone who refused to let this place be forgotten."
Vice President Steven Cataldi said the local area is already buzzing with anticipation.
"This isn't just win for rugby league fans - it's a win for Belmore," Mr Cataldi said.
"Cafes and restaurants on Burwood Road are booking out, foot traffic is rising, and businesses are preparing for a mjor boost in trade on game night. You can feel the energy around Belmore already. The return of NRL games mans exposure and economic activity, all centred around our local heartland. Back to Belmore has worked tirelessly for ten years to restore the facility's relevance as a professional sporting precinct. Monday's night match is the culmination of that vision and a powerful reminder of what grassroots determination can achieve."
Kick-off is set for 7pm and fans are encouraged to arrive early to soak up the atmosphere of a night that promises to be both emotional and historic.
