The Back to Belmore executive committee is delighted with the announcement that the Abbott Coalition Government will honour the $4 million government grant pledged by the previous Labor government towards Belmore Sports Ground.
Local residents and advocates of the historic venue's restoration had rallied to fight for the future of Belmore Sports Ground. Several hundred supporters have written letters to their local federal MPs expressing heartfelt support for the Sydney Multicultural Arts & Sports Precinct.
The letters were part of an ongoing campaign initiated by Back to Belmore Inc. and The Express newspaper to lobby the Federal Government for adequate funding to ensure the $4 million transformation of Belmore Sports Ground into a multicultural arts and sports precinct, promised by Labor in May 2013, went ahead.
"Back to Belmore is pleased that people power has triumphed over petty politics. We extend our warmest gratitude to the Hon. Warren Truss (Regional Development Minister) for honouring his Labor predecessor's promise of restoring the most beautiful sporting facility in the world," said Back to Belmore president Luke Brailey.
"We thank Mr Truss and the Coalition Government for demonstrating that it can be about the populace and the people, and not about the politics. This transformation is essential for Belmore Sports Ground's future and our executive committee would like to thank each and every person who wrote to their local MPs, regardless of their political stripes, in support of this initiative. This is a victory for all proponents of local sports and Belmore's best days now truly lie ahead of her."
