Xtra Time: League

By Jamie Pandaram

8 September 2005 – The Torch

BELMORE Sportsgrounds' future is undecided as yet, but Canterbury Council will soon hire consultants to cancel out a number of potential options and choose the one most suitable for the community. The council's general manager Jim Montague revealed to Xtratime last week that sporting use was only one of the options being considered.

He also virtually put an end to thoughts of the ground remaining as a rugby league field, saying: "It would be fair to say rugby league has undergone a transformation over recent years, and there is not the same demand for these types of suburban grounds and we've got to keep that in mind." Soccer clubs have approached the council to set up a base but if that were to eventuate it would only be a temporary arrangement as no club can afford to take out a long-term lease on the site. The Bulldogs will relocate from Belmore to Sydney Olympic Park at the end of the 2006 NRL season.
