Back to Belmore

The countdown is on for Belmore Sports Ground to once again host top-level rugby league, with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs set to take on the Canberra Raiders in an upcoming premiership match that promises to rekindle memories of a classic era.

The match will mark the first time the two clubs have met at Belmore since Sunday, 15 March 1998, when the Bulldogs defeated the Raiders 20-10 in front of a loyal home crowd. Eighteen years later, the two sides return to the famous suburban venue, and anticipation is building rapidly across the Canterbury-Bankstown district.

Back to Belmore President Luke Cevolani said the game is yet another example of how far the community has come in restoring the historic venue's place in the sporting calendar.

"It's hard to believe how far we've come since we started in 2005," Mr Cevolani said.

"To be welcoming back a club like Canberra to Belmore after almost two decades is incredibly special - not just for us, but for the fans who've stood by this precinct through thick and thin."

Vice President Steven Cataldi said the match adds to a growing list of milestones achieved since Belmore was re-established as a viable NRL venue, the result of a decade-long campaign driven by community pride and determination.

"We've always believed in what this ground could be," Mr Cataldi said.

"We're very proud what Back to Belmore has achieved, and we'll keep working to ensure Belmore remains part of the rugby league landscape for years to come."

With strong atendances recorded at previous Belmore matches, organisers are hopeful for another big turnout and a boost for local businesses. Further match-day details are expected to be announced in the lead-up to the fixture.
