In a historic announcement today, it was confirmed that Belmore Sports Ground will host an NRL fixture in 2015, marking the first time in seventeen years that the historic venue will stage a top-tier rugby league match.
The news represents a major milestone in the long-standing grassroots movement to restore the Belmore precinct to its rightful place on the professional sporting calendar.
Back to Belmore President Luke Cevolani said the announcement is a proud and emotional moment for all those who never gave up on the iconic facility.
"This is a truly historic day for the Belmore community," Mr Cevolani said.
"For many years, people said it couldn't be done. But thanks to the tireless efforts of local residents, businesses and supporters, the NRL is coming back to Belmore. This is an incredible outcome for the Canterbury-Bankstown district."
Vice President Steven Cataldi said this would not have happened without Back to Belmore.
"Over the past nine years, the organisation has worked to ensure Belmore's facilities were modernised and match-ready, despite the odds," Mr Cataldi said.
"In 2005, we set out to preserve the legacy of this great venue. Today, we can proudly say we've helpd bring NRL fixtures back where they belong."
The announcement has sparked excitement across the Canterbury-Bankstown region, with local businesses, families and long-time supporters welcoming the return of live NRL action to their backyard. Further details of the 2015 march are expected to be confirmed in due course.
