Back to Belmore has warmly welcomed a motion tabled today in the NSW Legislative Assembly by Canterbury MP Linda Burney, recognising the long-awaited commencement of the $8.4 million upgrade of Belmore Sports Ground and applauding the tireless efforts of the community-led campaign to restore the historic venue.
In her speech to Parliament, Ms Burney acknowledged the vital role played by Back to Belmore in reviving interest in the ground and uniting local sporting groups behind a shared vision. She also congratulated both Back to Belmore and the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs for their commitment to transforming Belmore into a modern, multi-purpose facility.
Back to Belmore President Luke Brailey expressed deep appreciation for the public recognition and Ms Burney's longstanding support.
"We sincerely thank Linda Burney for her kind words in Parliament and her continued advocacy on behald of Belmore Sports Ground," Mr Brailey said.
"Linda has always been a staunch supporter of our efforts and a true friend of the Belmore community."
Mr Brailey said the commencement of the $8.4 million upgrade marked a significant turning point for the facility and reinforced the power of grassroots advocacy when matched with political leadership.
"This moment is the result of years of persistence, collaboration and community spirit," he said.
"We are proud of how far we've come, and excited about what we can achieve together in the years ahead."
Since its establishment in 2005, Back to Belmore has led the campaign to save and restore Belmore Sports Ground, advocating for the venue's revitalisation as a vital sporting and community asset for the Canterbury-Bankstown region and beyond.
