In a landmark moment for women's sport in the Canterbury-Bankstown region, Belmore Sports Ground will host the Bulldogs NRLW team for the very first time this weekend when they face off against the Canberra Raiders.
Kick-off is set for 12.45pm on Saturday, marking a significant chapter for the historic venue which will be the stage for the top-tier women's rugby league fixture.
Back to Belmore President Luke Cevolani says the game represents more than just a milestone for Belmore Sports Ground.
“This is a defining moment for our local community. To see women competing at the elite level on the hallowed turf at Belmore sends a powerful message about identity, representation and progress in sport,” Mr Cevolani said.
“This is a deeply significant moment. It represents progress not just for women's sport, but for our local area. It will be an auspicious opportunity to put the spotlight on Belmore and the NRLW at a time when women's playing numbers are booming in Australia.”
Patron Luke Brailey says Saturday's match is seen as a culmination of two decades of community-driven effort to preserve and modernise the iconic facility.
“This game wouldn't be possible without the work that's gone into restoring Belmore Sports Ground. It is the result of sustained community effort,” Mr Brailey said.
“The venue is here today – fit for professional competition – and it is here to stay because the people of the Canterbury-Bankstown district believed in it strongly. It's incredibly rewarding to see our vision over the last twenty years helping make history. Given the rising support for women's sport and the surge in NRLW popularity, the event is bound to draw strong crowds and national attention.”
The economic impact of the NRLW fixture is also expected to be significant, with local businesses on Burwood Road in Belmore and surrounding areas anticipating a welcome boost in trade in the lead-up to and on the day of the match.
