More than 16,000 fans were at Belmore Sports Ground yesterday to see the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs take on the Wests Tigers as the NRL celebrated Multicultural Round.
The home crowd was mostly a sea of blue and white who spent their Sunday afternoon at the historic facility watching the Bulldogs snap a four-game losing streak at their spiritual home, defeating the Tigers 26-22 as the mercury soared into the mid-to-high 30s.
Back to Belmore Patron Luke Brailey said he was impressed with how the NRL game had gone and the response from the Canterbury-Bankstown community.
“No matter where your NRL allegiance lay, the day's biggest winners were Belmore retailers and their employees. The event was a major economic boon for local businesses,” Mr Brailey said.
“While the economic impacts on the local area are absolutely incredible, it was also great for kids and families to have this kind of opportunity to come together to celebrate the iconic venue's rich history and the amazing cultural diversity of the Canterbury-Bankstown district. There is a tremendous amount of civic pride associated with the premiership matches at Belmore Sports Ground and the Bulldogs should be commended for consistently embracing their spiritual heartland. It was a marvellous occasion not to be missed.”
The Bulldogs will return to Belmore Sports Ground in Round 20 on Saturday, 15 July when they face off against the Brisbane Broncos.
