Media Statement

14 November 2016

Back to Belmore has extended its warm congratulations to newly elected Member for Canterbury, Sophie Cotsis, following her decisive victory in Saturday's by-election.

Ms Cotsis, the Labor Party candidate, succeeds The Hon. Linda Burney MP, who vacated the state seat earlier this year to successfully contest the federal seat of Barton at the July federal election. The electorate of Canterbury includes Belmore Sports Ground, a venue of major significance to the local community and the focus of ongoing grassroots advocacy led by Back to Belmore.

President Luke Cevolani congratuled Ms Cotsis on her election and said he looked forward to a strong and cooperative relationship.

"On behalf of our organisation and the wider Belmore community, I warmly congratulate Sophie Cosis on her by-election victory," Mr Cevolani said.

"We wish her every success in her new role representing the people of Canterbury."

Mr Cevolani said Back to Belmore is eager to engage with Ms Cotsis on matters relating to the long-term future of the historic sporting precinct.

"We look forward to working with Ms Cotsis in the interests of her electorate to ensure that Belmore Sports Ground is not only preserved, but strengthened as a community and sporting hub for generations to come," he said.

Since 2005, Back to Belmore has championed the restoration of Belmore Sports Ground and its reactivation as a facility for professional sport, while promoting its broader community value across the Canterbury-Bankstown region.
